An attorney lookup is a search of the official roster that a state bar, state supreme court or court agency keeps for the lawyers it licenses. Search the table to open the directory for any of the 50 states or the District of Columbia and confirm a lawyer's license status and listed office details. Identifiers differ by state: New York issues a 7-digit Registration Number, while the Illinois ARDC search shows no number. These directories exist to verify licenses, and their terms limit commercial use.

Where can I look up an attorney in each state?

Look up an attorney in the official directory of the state that licensed the lawyer. A state bar, the state supreme court or a court agency runs each one. The table links the directory for all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Each directory covers the lawyers its own jurisdiction admitted. Maine's Board of Overseers of the Bar, for example, lists attorneys admitted to practice in Maine as of the previous day, so an attorney lookup in state bar directories starts with the state where the lawyer holds a license.

State bars run 29 of the 51 entries below, and courts or court agencies run 22. New Hampshire confirms good standing through an online request form, and New York's row opens the court system's public attorney registration data on data.ny.gov.

License status

What does an attorney lookup show?

An attorney lookup shows whether a lawyer holds a license and in what status, plus office details that vary by state. Maryland's listing marks each lawyer's status, and North Carolina's shows whether a member is active and eligible to practice there.

Status vocabularies differ between registries. The State Bar of Montana search sorts members into types such as active attorney, inactive attorney, emeritus, suspended and disbarred. New York's registration data uses values such as delinquent, deceased, incapacitated and resigned.

A listing is not always proof of good standing. Maine's directory states that inclusion does not necessarily mean the attorney is in good standing, and Maryland's listing also includes lawyers on inactive or retired status and lawyers affected by disciplinary action.

Contact fields also differ. The South Carolina Judicial Branch search returns a name, phone number, address and email address. Iowa's lawyer search states that home addresses and telephone numbers cannot be released to the public, so its location filters match business addresses.

What do state bar directory terms allow?

State bar directories exist to verify one lawyer's license at a time, and their terms restrict commercial use. Georgia's terms exclude resale, commercial use and data-mining tools, and Indiana's prohibit robots, spiders and aggregating Roll of Attorneys data.

The State Bar of Georgia's terms of use say the site license does not include any resale or commercial use of the site or its contents, or any use of data mining, robots, spiders or crawlers. The Indiana Supreme Court's terms for the Roll of Attorneys bar copying the information to sell or promote other products.

Official bodies also publish attorney records as downloadable public data. The New York State Unified Court System posts its attorney registration records on data.ny.gov as public information under 22 NYCRR 118, updated quarterly. The USPTO offers a patent practitioner roster file that it updates nightly.

How do bar numbers differ by state?

Bar number labels and formats differ by state. New York issues a 7-digit Registration Number, Maine uses a 6-digit Bar Number, and the Illinois ARDC and State Bar of Georgia directory searches show no number field.

The label decides how a number search works. Maine's directory asks for all 6 digits, with leading zeros, and the Wisconsin search calls the same kind of field an ID Number in basic search and a Member ID in advanced search.

A number only means something next to the state that issued it. Attorney contact records therefore pair each bar number with a bar admission state column; see how bar numbers appear in an attorney email database.

How do I look up a patent attorney?

Use the USPTO Office of Enrollment and Discipline practitioner search. On September 15, 2026, it counted 53,795 active patent practitioners: 38,406 attorneys, 14,724 agents, 6 design practitioners and 659 with limited recognition.

Does an attorney lookup show disciplinary history?

Some lookups do. Colorado's Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel names its tool Attorney / LLP Search & Disciplinary History, and the California courts tell consumers to review a lawyer's discipline record through the State Bar's Attorney Search.

Can I download a state's full attorney list?

New York publishes one. Its NYS Attorney Registrations dataset on data.ny.gov covers all registered attorneys admitted in New York, is posted quarterly and carries office contact fields but no email column.

Why can't I find a lawyer in a state directory?

Directories cover only lawyers admitted in their own jurisdiction. Maryland's listing suggests entering partial last names and checking similar spellings, and Oregon's directory excludes deceased licensees.
