Cornell's Legal Information Institute explains that divorce issues are typically resolved in family court, where judges divide the marital property, decide child custody and order alimony or child support. That workload defines what family law offices purchase: practice-management and billing software, document assembly for petitions and settlement agreements, court e-filing services, financial-disclosure and support-calculation tools, mediators, forensic accountants, process servers and legal marketing.

The National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBTA) states on its website that it is a national board certifying organization accredited by the American Bar Association. Its Family Trial Law standards, revised in May 2024, require 5 years of family trial practice right before the application. An applicant spends at least 30% of working time on family trial law during the 3 preceding years. The applicant has also served as lead counsel in 15 or more family law trials to verdict or judgment, with at least 30 days in trial.
The NBTA adds 20 further contested matters, 45 hours of relevant continuing legal education in the 3 years before applying, and 10 to 12 references that include at least 3 judges and 3 opposing or co-counsel attorneys. Applicants submit an unpublished legal writing sample and pass a written exam; the board accepts the family trial exams given by Florida, New Jersey and the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers as equivalents. Suspension of a law license revokes the certificate automatically.
State programs measure experience differently, as the table shows. Certification stays voluntary: the NBTA's general principles state that no attorney must hold a family trial law certificate before practicing in that field.
